The Epson Workforce WF-7720 was designed to bring Epson’s signature print and scan quality to a wide format machine. It’s big, powerful, and surprisingly intuitive.
There’s different classes of wide format printers, but the biggest factor in determining which one you need is whether you need quality or efficiency. Our Epson Workforce WF-7720 review will tell you which category this printer falls into.
Early Bottom Line:
This Epson Workforce WF-7720 review will show that this is a great printer for professionals who want to make a big impression with their prints. Although the print head clogs easily, this printer will last with regular maintenance. Particularly for printing and scanning tabloid size art prints, this printer is one of the best.
Background Info
What is a Wide Format Printer?
A wide format printer is a printer which prints larger than normal sizes; at least tabloid sized (11 in. X 17 in.) These printers have a wide range of applications, and are typically used for artwork, graphics, posters, blueprints, or large documents and spreadsheets.
Who is this Epson Workforce WF-7720 Review For?
This Epson Workforce WF-7720 review is for anyone who is in need of a wide format printer for personal or professional use. Anyone who is looking for a great printer for printing and scanning photos and artwork should definitely keep reading.
What You Need to Look For
When looking for a wide format printer, you’ll be looking for most of the same things as smaller printers; speed, efficiency, reliability. I also recommend people look for printers with two trays like the Epson Workforce WF-7720, so you don’t need to change the paper size all the time. This Epson Workforce WF-7720 review will detail all these points and more.

The Good
Two Paper Trays
- Having an extra paper tray seems like a luxury until you don’t have it. Then you’ll realize it’s a necessity.
- Especially for wide format printers, having a second paper tray is a must. That way you can put your large paper in the bottom tray and your regular paper in the top. Even if you don’t use multiple sizes of paper, you can fit a full ream between both trays. That’s awesome.
Wide Format Capabilities
Obviously, if you are looking for a wide format printer, then you need a printer that’s capable of printing a multitude of larger sizes.
Having owned a few wide format printers, I like having the ability to set a custom paper size if necessary. With the Epson Workforce WF-7720, you can print any size paper between 4 in. X 6 in. and 13 in. X 19 in.
Auto Document Feeder
Traditionally, wide format printers have been very basic printers without all in one features. Having a auto document feeder on a printer this size works great for office purposes. When you need to scan a stack of documents, you have that option. And, if you need to scan a poster, the flatbed is there as well.
Best Scanner
Speaking of scanners, it’s well known in the electronics industry that Epson builds the best scanners. Their printers definitely have problems, but their scanners are nearly infallible.
The scanner for the Epson Workforce WF-7720 has a max resolution of 4800 DPI, and have a fuller color gamut than competitors. It’s just a superior product to competitors.
Mid-Range Ink
For some customers this is a plus, and for some it’s a minus. This printer takes Epson’s 252 series of ink. This ink is moderately efficient, printing 300 pages per cartridge at a cheap MSRP.
They also offer XL cartridges, which yield more pages. These are great options for moderate users. The costs per page are reasonable, and replacing all the cartridges at once won’t break the bank.
Precision Core Print Head
The Precision Core print head is a Epson design that allows for better print quality. The less technical explanation is that Precision Core print heads use smaller drops of ink, so you can get more detailed images. It has drawbacks, which we’ll get into, but the quality is undeniable.
The Bad
Print Head Clogs
This is the downside to the Precision Core technology. Every printer I’ve had with a Precision Core print head clogs up very easily. Even if I don’t print for a week, I’ll need to run the cleaning process a few times.
The best way to prevent the print head clogging up is to print regularly, and run the cleaning process as soon as clogging starts. If any of your print heads clog up, keep running the cleaning until they unclog. Best of luck, because a new print head costs more than the printer.
Huge Space Hog
This printer is massive. It’s bigger than most people will tolerate being in their house. Be sure you have room before buying this printer, so it doesn’t end up in your garage.
Moderately Loud
This printer isn’t the loudest I’ve owned, but it’s noticeable. I had it in my living room for a while, and every now and then the carrier would make noise and scare the life out of my dog. It was pretty funny.
The Bottom Line
This Epson Workforce WF-7720 review has demonstrated why this is one of the best wide format printers on the market today. It is fast, efficient, and cranks out some of the best quality prints you could ask for. I’d highly recommend it for anyone looking to print documents and images at a size that will make an impression.
Our Epson Workforce WF-7720 review has shown that this is the best wide format printer for art prints currently on the market. If you are scanning or printing art that is tabloid size or larger, buy this printer.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is a formidable competing model of wide format printer. With super fast printing and ultra efficient ink, you should take a look at this printer if you will be printing a lot of large documents.

Gets about 1/5 the page yield from each cartridge, relative to what Epson claims.
Yes, that’s common for all manufacturers, unfortunately. The page yield they advertise is for 5% page coverage, which is less than pretty much everything we print.
Turns out Epson thought this behavior was abnormal.
They offered to replace the printer, declaring it had “hardware failure.”
Looking at reviews on Amazon — it seems like a common defect — a defect that exists in many printers of this model, but not all… My guess: poor quality control in some part, or an inconsistent aspect of the design.
We returned the printer to the Staples store where we bought it. They took the return and we purchased another of the same model.
The print yield per cartridge on the replacement printer appears to be at least 2-3x better than that of the original printer (1/2 – 1/3 the ink usage per print). Still not the rated print yield for a typical page of type, but far better.
My advice — DO consider this printer — it has many wonderful qualities. BUT — BE PREPARED to return it once or twice, to get a printer without the “ink-hog” defect.
It uses the same refillable cartridge (T252) used by the WF 7610 which I have had for several years. Most modern printers cannot easily use You can get 3rd party refillable cartridges for the 252 cartridge used by this printer.
Using refillable cartridges cuts the ink costs to something about 10% of purchasing normal cartridges.
Most modern printers cannot easily use 3rd party ink – and this makes them so expensive to use that I refuse to buy one.
I had the worst experience. I tried returning to staples who suggested I give it more time and could return it later. Later ended up after a few months in the box, due to an unexpected injury. The issue continued. I am on the 5th trouble ticket. From being falsely accused of purchasing fake ink (after emailing a picture of the original ink in the printer) to told it’s a driver (spent several hours over four days trying to install a non-defective driver; the worst is when one ink runs dry (20 to 30 sheets in), the black only print functions stops and the scanner ceases to function as well. In fact, until you replace ink, all functionality is gone. Do not buy this printer!!!! My final replacement was received damaged. If you have second thoughts, return it at once or you will be out of $299.99 plus any extended warranty cost. Epson only replaces with a new model within 30 days of purchase.
Have the Epson Workforce 7720. Every day I receive notice that it needs firmware update. I click the button to proceed and nothing takes place and the notification reappears. How does one get their update? Ps I am not too tech savvy so that is part of the problem. Any advice?
